There are many things to do in Tuscany, but skiing is not always the first thing to come to mind. However, there is a wonderful ski resort called Abetone, located just two hours from Florence. Think of it as a little piece of Switzerland in Tuscany.
Abetone ski resort has over 50 km (31 miles) of piste. The slopes are nestled between four well-linked valleys: Val di Luce, Valle dello Scoltenna, Valle dell Sestalone, and Valle di Lima. The convergence of these valleys gives skiers a breath taking view. One of the best things about Abetone: it is considered to be very safe. There has never been an avalanche.
There are a number of nursery slopes for beginners, as well as challenging slopes for the more experienced. There are several multilingual schools, which offer lessons even for the most inexperienced skiers.
There is also a state-of-the-art terrain park for snowboarders that includes a half-pipe and 3 metre (10 feet) jumps. The park is perfect for thrill seeking snowboarders.

If you happen to visit Abetone during a full moon, don’t miss one of the famous full moon parties! People get together on the top of the mountain and ski down by the light of the moon or anything else they can find (torches, lamps, light sabers….).
For those who are not all that keen on outdoor sports, there are plenty of alternative activities to keep you occupied. There are several good restaurants in the the area where you can take a break and enjoy some great cuisine. One favorite of travellers is Albergo Regina Restaurant. Abetone is known for its mushrooms, so be sure to order something with mushrooms in it!
